Delta-9, Why It's Become So Popular To The Government.

Updated: Oct 25, 2022

Why are Delta-9 Products Legal?

Marijuana has become popular worldwide in recent times. Otherwise known as cannabis, it generally refers to a 3-plants group with psychoactive properties.

Cannabis plants contain many complex compounds, including cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the prime component that is responsible for the hallucinogenic effects that marijuana causes.

Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol is one of the four types of THC. It is also the most abundant THC that can easily be extracted. The high associated with weed is primarily due to delta-9.

Apart from producing the psychoactive effect, it is also known for its antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, antiglaucoma, and analgesic properties.

In the 2018 US Farm Bill, delta-9 derived from hemp was legalized across all the states. The significant factors behind the legalization of delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol in the USA are discussed below.

Legalization of Delta-9

The legality of delta-9 is somehow complex. According to The Controlled Substances Act, high THC derived from cannabis is considered illegitimate. Conversely, US Farm Law 2018 legalizes hemp-derived delta-9 if the product contains only 0.3% of the compound by dry weight.

There are specific reasons behind the legalization of hemp-derived delta-9. Some of them are as follows.

1. Economic Benefits

One of the principal reasons behind the legalization is economic benefits. Due to the surge in demand for delta-9 and other cannabis products, the economic benefits are obvious.

Commercial availability of delta-9 helps increase text revenues, investment opportunities, and employment rate. Per an estimate, allowing the weed industry to grow will significantly impact the country’s economic growth as it ages.

Following a report, complete legalization of cannabis, including delta-9, could help generate $128.8 billion in tax revenue and create 1.6 million jobs.

2. Legalization of Delta-9 Reduces Government Spending

According to a report published in 2013, the US government was spending roughly many billion dollars annually fighting the war against the use of delta-9 and other marijuana components.

Dr. Jon Gettman of George Mason University conducted a study in 2007. He suggested that the US government could save at least $10.7 billion annually in criminal justice expenditures if tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabis were legalized.

3. Low Rate of Crimes

The reduced spending on controlling weed-related crimes is also associated with a low crime rate. Legalizing the recreational use of delta-9 has a great saying in limiting crimes.

Data collected from various surveys conducted by different national sources during 2000-2019 tells that legalization of these compounds has dramatically reduced drug-related crimes.

4. It Has Milder Psychoactive Effect

The chief stance of the opponent of the legalization of THC is because of the high it causes. They claim that frequent THC use might lead to mental and physical problems like paranoia, disorientation, and anxiety.

However, when a cannabis product contains only 0.3% delta-9, its psychoactive effects decrease. Hence, it becomes safe to consume. That is why the cultivation of delta-9 derived from hemp is not considered against the law.

5. Public Health Benefits

Another crucial motive behind legalization is public health benefits. Delta-9 is packed with many health advantages. Its medicinal properties can be instrumental in treating or reducing the symptoms of numerous diseases.

Various scientific studies claim that delta-9 can effectively handle chronic pain, sleep disorders, symptoms of multiple sclerosis, seizure disorders, and other health conditions.

Bottom-Line

Delta-9 is one of the cannabinoids found in marijuana and hemp plants. This is the compound that imparts weed with psychoactive properties.

Legalizing this compound in the USA owes financial, social, and health-related benefits. The decision is linked to increased tax revenues, job growth, low crime rate, and health advantages.
