Why In The World Would You Want To Grow Weed... Knowing Nothing About Grow Cycles?


Cannabis, is a versatile plant with a rich history of medicinal and recreational use, undergoes distinct growth cycles throughout its life. If you really know nothing about what to look for during these cycles then this is for you. There are six steps in this process that are easy to read through understand they include: germination stage, seedling stage, vegetative stage, pre-flowering, flowering stage, and the all important stage of harvesting.




Understanding these growth cycles is essential for successful growing and optimizing plant health and yield. From seed to harvest, let's explore the stages of cannabis growth and the key factors involved at each step.

1. Germination: The Journey Begins


The growth cycle of cannabis begins with germination. In this stage, the seed cracks open, and a taproot emerges.



The seed requires warmth, moisture, and oxygen to initiate germination. Many cultivators me included, prefer germinating seeds in a damp paper towel or they put their seeds directly in a germination medium until a healthy seedling appears.



2. Seedling Stage: Establishing the Foundation


After germination, the seedling stage begins. During this period, the cannabis plant develops its first set of leaves, called cotyledons, which serve as energy reserves for early growth. True leaves eventually emerge, and the plant starts to photosynthesize and grow rapidly. Adequate light, proper humidity, and a mild nutrient solution are crucial for healthy seedling development.




3. Vegetative Stage: Expanding and Maturing



Once the plant has established a solid foundation in the seedling stage, it enters the vegetative stage. This phase is characterized by vigorous growth as the plant develops more leaves, branches, and a stronger root system. It requires longer light cycles, typically 18-24 hours of light per day, to encourage vegetative growth. Nutrient-rich soil or a well-balanced fertilizer regimen promotes healthy foliage development.


4. Pre-flowering Stage: Transitioning to Reproduction



As the cannabis plant reaches maturity, it enters the pre-flowering stage. During this phase, the plant starts to show its gender, with male plants developing pollen sacs and female plants forming pistils. Identifying and removing male plants is important for growers who desire seedless buds. Pre-flowering typically occurs when the plant receives 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness each day, signaling the transition to the flowering stage.




5. Flowering Stage: Bud Development and Ripening


The flowering stage is the most critical period for cannabis growers as it determines the plant's yield and potency. During this phase, female cannabis plants produce resinous buds rich in cannabinoids and terpenes. The flowers develop in response to a 12/12 light cycle (12 hours of light followed by 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness).



Proper nutrition, appropriate light intensity, and maintaining ideal temperature and humidity levels are crucial during flowering to prevent stress and ensure optimal bud growth.




6. Harvest: Reaping the Fruits of Labor

The final stage of the cannabis growth cycle is the harvest. This stage is determined by monitoring the trichomes, the small glandular structures on the buds that contain the valuable cannabinoids and terpenes. Harvesting too early may result in underdeveloped buds, while harvesting too late can lead to a decrease in potency and flavor. Timing the harvest based on trichome color and maturity is essential for obtaining desired effects.




Post-harvest processes such as drying and curing are also important to enhance the flavor, aroma, and overall quality of the final product. Proper drying and curing methods help remove excess moisture, reduce the chance of mold or bacterial growth, and improve the bud's taste and smoothness.
